On Sunday, September 17, 2006, I finally decided to close my doors to the one thing we seemed to all have in common: MySpace.

It was a bittersweet day for sure, but I just couldn't ignore that nagging, annoying voice that kept telling me how MySpace only fosters addiction, superficiality, and is actually nothing much more than a self commercial. The voice spoke truth- MySpace made me yearn to feel connected to people, when really, it was the strong sense of disconnection to the real world that hypnotized me, making me yearn for more.

To think that the majority of the United States' youth is spending such an unbelievable amount of time engaging themselves in this unreal world, is not only disheartening, but disturbing. It has become more than a service, but a lifestyle. We live in this artificial existence that depreciates the human soul. Why? Because we are addicted. And like all addictions, when we are not using, we feel like we're missing something, and are often depressed. We have relied on MySpace to fill a need that should be given to us through a more natural state of being. Yet, whether it's ignorance, denial, or indifference, our eyes are glued to that screen- awaiting the comments people give us, to make us feel complete.

Some of the very things our soul needs to survive on may bore us nowadays. For instance, sitting on a hill in a meadow making shapes out of clouds. Watching a flock of birds fly home for the night across a gray sky. Spending the day walking around with a loved one. All of these are natural experiences which help keep us grounded and connected to the source. The only thing I feel while submerging myself in MySpace is the obsessive need to find out more and more about everyone's insignificant (yet sometimes very personal) details of their lives through a computer screen that would often give me a headache. That, and the desperate need to check if anyone had posted me a flattering comment. I found myself more preoccupied with other people's profiles than the natural things that keep me whole.
鑱?/p>
This raises the question, "What does today's youth value most?" We may as well bid farewell to any hope of restoring a more natural and conscious tomorrow. With more than 106 million users, and the third most popular website in the US, MySpace proves to win. From livestrong bracelets to flags on our cars, most of us just jump on the bandwagon, crack open a red bull and wave good-by.
鑱?/p>
I say, if you want know me, look me in the eyes, take a walk with me. Why hide behind our computer screens where everything is pretentious and impersonal? I have desires to fulfill and passions to live out. I don't want MySpace to slow me down.
My candid opinion about Myspace?
wow you have a strong opinion. i have found that myspace is aonly addicting if others pay attention to it and therefore if you are unpopular mysepace is less fun becuase less people will pay attention to it. thats it. i still love mymyspace evn tho i am bored of it
